Ghost came to a halt, turning toward the group, his hands on his hips and an unmistakable anger in his gaze. “We’ve been here for four weeks, and three people claim to have seen these kids, but no one saw anyone with them. Where would the parents be? It says the kids are twelve, fourteen, and sixteen; it’s unusual for them to be alone without the parents. Where in the world are they?”

“I agree; this is strange,” I chimed in. “Let’s go to the next village. If we don’t hear something there, we’ll consider leaving. Savannah deserves to be in a loving home where she can play instead of on my back all day. I’m sure if there are white people around here, someone would know where they are. We’re not getting any leads. We keep hitting dead ends.”

Spartan, always the one who spent the majority of his time thinking, looked at us. “If we have not found them in another week, we should seriously consider leaving. I’m still trying to unravel who sent me an urgent message to come here. I haven’t seen anyone who has attempted to kill me. So what is the purpose of my presence?”

“Who knows,” Rebel muttered. “I’ve never been on a mission where we didn’t have leads to a certain place where we could find more information out. We also need another vehicle.”

“I’m in agreement,” Ghost added. “This time, we’ll see if we can buy one instead of borrowing it.”

“Two hours later, we approached a small village. It was small, but there were kids outside, rather than playing they were working. This pattern seemed consistent across all the villages we had passed through.”

“As we got closer and observed them, a sense of unease settled in. They all appeared sickly. I covered Savannah’s head with a blanket, and we all shielded our faces, careful not to touch anything.

Approaching the first person I saw about the white kids. I stood six feet away. She pointed to a hut on the edge of the village, and we made our way there. Calling out, I asked, “Hello, are there any Americans in there?”

A boy about sixteen stuck his head out, “Yes, who wants to know?”

“Your grandfather hired us to bring you home. We’ve been searching for you for weeks,” I replied, the other two stepped out of the hut. “Are any of you sick?”

“No, we’ve avoided the village because we could see that people here were sick. We need to leave; these people have been dying,” the oldest boy explained.

“What are your names?” I asked.

“I’m Michael, this is my sister Melanie, and our brother Kevin,” Michael said, putting his backpack on.

“We won’t take any chance with sickness. Let’s keep a safe distance of six feet. Where are your parents?”

“We haven’t seen them in six weeks. They left us in the middle of the night. They got on the bus and drove away without a care in the world, leaving their children behind in a hostile country.”

I exchanged glances with my team, unsure what to say.
